One year ago, after I walked with a friend to the Moore’s school of music for an audition, I received this email:

“Diana,

I’m glad to say that Corazon de Mariachi has decided to have you join our group. Your singing talent will give us great help.

We will continue our practice this coming Friday, the 31st at 5:30pm in the Moore’s School of Music. The room number will
more than likely be in room 242, but keep an eye out for postings.

Please respond if you are still interested in the group. We wish you the best in school.

Maria”

The rest is history.

Being a member of Corazon de Mariachi has impacted my life a great deal. A year ago I was a scared
little freshman majoring in chemical engineering. Why? I do not know. It sounded smart. I have always
been told I was smart, therefore thought I should just give it a try. How many dumb chemical engineers do
you know? After a semester of misery and musical discovery, I decided that I would not let my talent go to
waste. Now, thanks to the Mariachi, I am a music major, and enjoying every minute of it. My ultimate goal
is to eventually utilize my position as a music teacher and start Mariachi programs in schools that do not have
them. It would give kids the opportunity to explore their musical potential, as well as expose them to the
culture that too many seem to take for granted.

More importantly, because of this group, I have met many extraordinary people. I have 9 new friends that
I otherwise would never have met. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to join.
